EMPLOYEES CHOOSE APPS OVER INTRANETS

The rapid progression of technology has left many in a position where the level of available technology in their home outweighs that of their workplace; both in terms of products and services. For internal communicators that means reaching their employees through their own devices.

People expect to have access to information anytime, anywhere, and the kind of content they interact with is increasingly interactive and social. To make the most of this opportunity, more and more companies are turning to apps as a means of communicating with their employees. Businesses are turning to methods of communication that are more suited towards tablet and smartphone access.

At an event organised by Sequel Group at Soho Hotel last week, the agency’s new app, App:IC, was officially launched. Representatives from Nationwide Building Society showcased their internal app, an app that use the App:IC framework. Paul Wheeler and Mark Gibson talked through their personally developed app for senior leaders, Buzz. Wheeler and Gibson stressed the popularity and share-ability of video and audio content, and reported good feedback. They reported that 50% of senior employees use the app, compared to the 32% who use the intranet.

Based on feedback during the ‘Talking all things mobile’ event, security appears to be a major concern for those looking into internal apps. Wheeler and Gibson are confident that the login requirements of their app, combined with employee confidentiality expectations, is enough to keep sensitive content secure.

Charles Fenoughty, digital media director at Sequel, spoke about the different options available for companies looking to make their digital internal comms mobile-ready. Fenoughty explained that there are three types of app available: native (built within the device), web (browser-based) and hybrid (combination of the two).

Fenoughty admits that if your intranet is mobile accessible, which most aren’t, then you may not need an app. “It’s always ‘audience first’. Don’t let the tail wag the dog and make an app just because your CEO read in the Telegraph that it’s trendy. The content you choose and the audience you have will decide your communications solution.” He says.

Sequel’s new app, App:IC compliments existing channels by delivering news articles from company intranets, or any other news platform, to a branded app.
