GLOBALISATION A KEY ISSUE FOR IROS IN 2010

IROs at yesterday’s Investor Relations Society Conference touted globalisation and diversity of shareholders as the decade’s most important issues.

Yesterday’s conference, held at The Brewery in London, saw National Grid director David Rees, James Alexander, head of equity research at M&G Investment Management, and Fergus McLeod, BP’s head of IR, discussing what the key issues facing companies and IROs would be in the new decade.

According to the panel, with the increase in international investors comes the challenge of more travel, the need for more IR resources, greater cultural sensibilities and the issue of foreign investors wanting to also work on joint ventures with companies. Adopting a long-term strategy was seen as key in facing these issues.

A vote among members of the audience on what they felt were the important issues resulted in the majority (36.1%) citing increased regulation. While the panel agreed that there will be some regulation, they disagreed that it would have a significantly negative effect on IR.

James Alexander called for “management to tell things how they are, less spin and less propaganda”.
